This Week’s Focus: Understanding Genre and Rhetorical Context
Instructions:
- Begin by reading Chapters 1–4 of your course textbook to review foundational concepts in reading, writing, and rhetorical analysis.
- Visit The Conversation (Links to an external site) and explore the site using the categories at the top or the search bar to locate an article that interests you.
- After selecting an article, compose your discussion post by addressing the following:
Discussion Post Requirements:
- Paste the link (URL) to the article you chose at the top of your post.
- Identify the type of reading and its genre (e.g., opinion, analysis, science report, cultural commentary, etc.).
- Analyze the rhetorical context by identifying the following:
- Writer (Who is the author, and what is their background?)
- Audience (Who is the article intended for?)
- Topic (What is the article about?)
- Purpose (What is the goal of the article—inform, persuade, analyze, etc.?)
- Context (What social, cultural, or political factors make this article relevant?)
- Explain why you selected this article. Did the article deliver on what the title promised?
- Write a summary of the article in your own words (approximately one paragraph).
Discussion Guidelines:
- The initial post must be a minimum of 300 words
- Respond to at least two classmates with thoughtful replies (each reply must be at least 50 words)
- No APA citation is required for this discussion
- Refer to the “Course FAQ” for additional participation and grading information
