Week 2 Discussion: Chapters 3 & 4 – Building The Team & Communication

Week 2 Discussion Forum: Chapters 3 & 4 – Communication & Emotional Intelligence in EMS Leadership

Chapters 3 and 4 focus on two critical components of successful EMS supervision: communication and emotional intelligence. As an EMS leader, how you communicate with your team and how well you manage your own emotions—and respond to the emotions of others—can significantly impact team morale, performance, and patient care.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Communication is a two-way street. Based on the reading, describe a time in your EMS experience when clear or unclear communication significantly affected the outcome of a situation. What role did you or your supervisor play?
  2. Emotional intelligence includes self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills. Which of these traits do you believe is the most important for an EMS supervisor to develop and why?
  3. From the chapters, which leadership strategy or tool stood out to you the most, and how could you apply it in your current or future role?
