Week 1 Discussion: The Role of the EMS Supervisor

Chapters 1 & 2: Foundations of EMS Supervision and Leadership Styles

Welcome to our first class discussion! In Chapters 1 and 2 of EMS Supervisor: Principles and Practice, we begin to explore the evolving role of the EMS Supervisor and the leadership styles that help guide effective supervision in the field.

As you complete your reading, think about how the author describes the shift from being a peer to a supervisor, and how different leadership approaches can impact a team in high-pressure EMS environments.

🔥 Discussion Prompt:

Part 1: Transitioning into Supervision
What do you believe is the most difficult part of transitioning from EMT/paramedic to EMS supervisor? Why? What strategies can be used to ease this transition while maintaining the respect of your team?

Part 2: Leadership Styles in EMS
Dominguez outlines various leadership styles (authoritative, democratic, laissez-faire, etc.). Which style do you think is most effective in an EMS setting and why? Are there situations where a different style might be more appropriate?
