Week 1 Assignment: Motivational Speech Analysis and Delivery

Welcome to Week 1!

In the first chapters of your textbook, we explore the foundational components of speech communication, such as the message, receiver, encoding, decoding, and the ethical considerations that shape effective public speaking.

This week, we focus on Motivational Speeches. You will complete a two-part assignment that introduces you to both analysis and delivery. Please read the instructions below carefully:

Part 1 – Motivational Speech Essay (Written)

Watch the assigned motivational speech video (linked in your course module).

Then, write a minimum 750-word essay in Times New Roman, 12-point font, preferably in APA format, analyzing the speech. Be sure to address the following:

  • Were you inspired by the speech? Why or why not?
  • What elements contributed to the emotional or motivational impact?
(Consider tone, content, delivery, visuals, music, etc.)
  • How could you apply the techniques used in this speech to your future role in public safety?

Submit this essay as a Word document.

Part 2 – Motivational Speech (Video Submission)

Record and submit your own motivational speech, no longer than 2 minutes. Your topic must be industry-related (i.e., fire service, EMS, law enforcement, emergency management, healthcare, etc.).

This is your first introduction to public speaking. The goal is to inspire—get me fired up about your field! Consider using tone, body language, and emotion to engage your audience.

  • Background music is optional.
  • This must be a video of you speaking directly to the camera. No music slideshows or voiceovers will be accepted.
  • Upload the video in MP4 format or post a YouTube link. No other formats will be accepted.

Submission Instructions

  • Submit both Part 1 and Part 2 under the same assignment link.
  • You may submit them separately—Learndash will record them as two submissions, which is fine.

Reminder:
Be sure to complete both parts of the assignment to receive full credit. This assignment sets the tone for your performance and engagement in the course, so give it your best effort!
