Week 2 Discussion: Capturing Your Audience
This week, we focus on one of the most important aspects of public speaking—capturing and engaging your audience. Whether you’re speaking to a room full of people or having a one-on-one conversation at work, the core principles of audience engagement still apply.
For this discussion:
Describe how you deliver speeches or convey important messages at your agency.
This doesn’t have to be a formal speech at a podium. Think about the informal but meaningful ways we share ideas in the workplace—whether it’s:
- A training session
- Orientation of a new employee
- A kitchen table talk
- A quick shift meeting
- Or a formal departmental presentation
Be sure to address:
- How do you gain and keep your audience’s attention
- Any specific techniques you use (tone, storytelling, visuals, movement, humor, etc.)
- What challenges do you face, and how do you overcome them
Important: This is not about patient or family interactions. We’re focusing on communication in professional peer or leadership contexts.
